Here is another letter I am in the process of sending...
To the Leaders of Western Governments
The European Parliament and Commission
The United Nations Security Council
All Permanent Missions to the United Nations
Dear Sirs/Madams
Re: Lebanon – Deployment of an International Peace Keeping Force
You have all chosen to place yourselves in positions of collective responsibility to represent the best interests of others, either by Democratic election, or due appointment to offices of responsibility.
Not only are you vested with the authority to act, but you are under a positive duty to act to protect and promote [legitimately constituted Governments] [Democratic processes], and Human Rights. Naturally there are Socio-Economic, Industrial and Agricultural considerations that you are obliged to address. However, absent [Government][Democracy], the Rule of Law, and fundamental rights and freedoms, all the rest is rendered meaningless.
To date the World powers have singularly failed to protect the fledgling democracy, or human rights, in Lebanon. Even now you hesitate to provide a peace keeping force. This time the excuse is that there is no mandate for the International Force to defend itself.
Not a single person in a position of authority in any World nation currently deserves their office. You are failing Lebanon, and in doing so you are failing every person or organisation you represent.
There is a window of opportunity for the intelligent and courageous leaders of the World to take a decisive step to secure peace in the Middle East as no one has done before. In securing a solution to a difficult, but not insurmountable, problem you would create the conditions that would lead to the dilution of extremism to the point where it is a spent force.
In order to achieve the solution you are going to have to: -
a) Stop the United States from dictating the international agenda;
b) Be tough with the Israelis, they cannot have everything they want;
c) Shake the Arab World out of its apathy; and
d) Vest the United Nations with the power and authority that will render it effective, and not merely a forum for pointless discussion.
A starting point is by positively demonstrating that the past few weeks of debate, and that UN Resolution 1701 was not a complete waste of time. Even as I write this there are increasing fears that the ceasefire in Lebanon will not hold.
The predominant reason is the absence of commitment from those who passed the UN Resolution to commit troops to the International Peace Keeping Force that is to be deployed in the region.
Your conduct, or lack of it; your reluctance to make a meaningful commitment to the peace keeping force; is proof positive to all who doubt United Nations integrity, that there is no real will to stop the Israel from doing whatever it wants. What perfect propaganda for the preachers of extremism.
Your weakness will be portrayed as a deliberate policy of World Leaders to engineer a failure of UN Resolution 1701.
Congratulations one and all, for you are about to make the situation much worse.
I cannot help but wonder how many more people will die before your consciences are pricked...
